Some History....

Hey, my name is Nancy.  I'm 50 years old, mother of 3 and married to a retired Navy Personnelman.  At my highest weight, I weighed 314 pounds.  I had lost 16 pounds prior to November 7, 2017.  I did that just by cutting out all drinks except water and "trying" to move more.  November 7, 2017, I made a decision to try Thrive by Le-Vel and haven't looked back.  I lost 20 pounds from November 7 to January 7.  I then kind of stalled out on my losing but continued to take my Thrive 3 steps every day, knowing that it would catch up.

This is me at my highest:

This is me starting Thrive and at day 21:

Then, in January, I went to the doctor and had blood-work done.  Come to find out, my liver enzymes were extremely high and apparently, have been high for quite some time but never looked into.  My new GI doctor decided it was time to take a look and see what was happening.  I went through all sorts of testing and am still scheduled for an Ultrasound on 1/22 to verify, but she believes that I have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.  According to WebMD Nonalcoholic Fatty liver Disease is most likely caused by obesity (duh) and diabetes (duh).  Both of these I have had for quite some time....seems like a lifetime.

The doctor stated that once certain liver numbers go below 150, there is irreversible damage to my liver and would lead to cirrhosis of the liver, meaning I would need a transplant of my liver.  I wasn't there yet, but I was close at 233.  All this, and I don't drink?  UGH!  She was giving me 6 months to turn things around and if not, next step would be a liver biopsy to see where my liver was and go from there. I left her office feeling hopeless.

Thrive was doing amazing on losing weight but I wasn't losing it fast enough to make that much of a difference in 6 months.  I went back to my office and researched all sorts of things about fatty livers, diabetes and weight loss. I stumbled across a video that changed my way of thinking and I know will change my life.  Dr. Sarah Hallberg spoke at Purdue University with regard to reversing Type 2 diabetes, here is the link.  She makes so much sense!

From there, I dove into research about Ketogenic diets and if they were safe for diabetes, how it can help fatty livers, etc.  I'm hooked!!!!  I had a wedding I was going to and I was not about to ruin my time at the wedding and wanted to eat anything I wanted without worrying.  However, let me tell you, I thought of the doctor's words every time I ate something with sugar or carbs in it all weekend.  I came home on Sunday, went grocery shopping, and have been on Keto 3 full days, today is the 4th day.

When I started my diabetic journey,  I was on Metformin for my blood sugar and they were high 200's.  When I reached a blood sugar of 280 they switched me from Metformin to Janumet.  Janumet was able to get me to 266, but I really wasn't going down much more.  I could see a future of taking insulin.  Mind you, I know what that is like.  My mother died from her diabetes, my grandmother on both my mother and father's side of the family had it, two of my brothers had it, and my husband has it.  I know what insulin dependent diabetes, type 2, does to the body.  I didn't want to go there!

I decided, there and then, after watching that video that I was not going to be my family.  I am going to do better for my body.  I started Keto on Monday as I said above.  Tuesday morning I woke up and my blood sugar was at 135.  I thought, holy crow, this is amazing.  Wed morning, I woke up, still taking my Janumet, and my sugar was 126.  Even lower?  Could it work this incredibly fast?  I thought, well maybe the Janumet is finally working.  At lunch, I was a little shaky, so thought maybe my blood sugar was too low....it was 89.  Before dinner, I was at 107.  I needed to know if my Janumet was doing this or the Keto.  I didn't take my Janumet last night or this morning....this morning I was at 126.  That is still a little high for a fasting blood sugar, but not bad.

So, now you are on this journey with me to see how long I can stay off my diabetes medication.  I am taking my sugars before every meal and at bedtime, so be assured that if I notice an increase in sugars, Janumet will be back on the menu.  I will go into my Keto macros tomorrow and let you know how/what I'm eating.
